Guest Post: "Writing in Different Genres"

Writing in different genres may sound like a difficult thing, but I think it’s much like an actor acting in two very different roles. The typical advice for writers is to write what you know. I like to do this, but I also like to write about what I don’t know. If you do enough research about anything you will then know enough about it- even enough to write about it.
I like to choose topics usually involving a drama, develop the character and then write through her eyes. This is when it’s like acting. It doesn’t mean that I have those qualities as a person. It just means that the character in my book does. Whenever I’m writing I have to become the person that I am writing about and experience her feelings. Sometimes I write from a child’s point of view. I think that’s easy for me because I have my own children and they help me to remember what’s it’s like to be a child. Sometimes I write from an adult point of view. Right now I’m writing about a young adult that has bipolar and is addicted to drugs. I had to do a lot of research about this before I wrote about it.
A common thing that readers think is this must have happened to you and that’s why you wrote about it. Some things in my books may have happened or may have been grossly exaggerated, but most of the things I write about come from my imagination. When you have a big imagination it’s easy to write in a variety of genres.
